In some places, “you can hike for days without seeing anyone,” says Sabina Sirco, a guide who leads trips on the Via Dinarica for Green Visions, a Sarajevo-based travel company, and writes about the trail and other adventures at “Local people are inviting you to camp in their garden. Often they don’t know English but they’re cooking something delicious for you.” Some days, you’ll encounter villagers waving from their homes or wordlessly leading you back to the path when you’ve strayed. Come evening, you might find yourself sitting alongside new friends, washing down home-cured meats with a healthy dose of throat-clearing rakia, a fruit brandy popular in the region.
