Journey to Jelsa, Hvar island – Croatia’s sunniest island

Travel from Sarajevo to Hvar island by bus and ferry.

The easiest way to travel to Hvar island. Hvar island is one of the sunniest islands in Croatia.

If you’re are traveling through the Balkans in summer my recommendation would be to travel before or after visting Sarajevo to visit Hvar island and to have your base in Jelsa.

The Bus Travel Sarajevo-Split

On Sunday night I started my trip from Sarajevo to the town of Jelsa on Hvar Island. First I went by bus to Split, (54 BAM – one direction) a city on Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast famous for the Diocletian’s Palace –  ancient fortress that has become the old town of Split.

Luckily, it wasn’t busy on the bus so the trip was pleasant. We crossed the border quickly and arrived early in the morning, at about 4 o’clock, in Split.

Ferry Split-Stari Grad

Across the main bus station is the ferry port and Jadrolinija ticket office, where I purchased my ticket (47 HRK) to Stari grad,  a town near Jelsa. If you are arriving in Split in the afternoon the best option is to buy a ticket for the catamaran that goes Split-Brac-Jelsa. It is a faster ride and leads your straight to Jelsa. But be aware the catamaran doesn’t sail from the same dock as the ferry.

When I arrived in Split the cafes near the main bus station didn’t work. If you are hungry there is a bakery and fast food that seems to be open all night. My ferry’s departure was at five o’clock, so I spend my free time resting on a bench and eating my breakfast. Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to go sightseeing in Split.

Beautiful Views from Ferry

The ferry has a big air-conditioned and comfortable salon. I was really tired so I spent half of my trip napping. Just when the sun came up I went on the deck and enjoyed in a light breeze and smell of the sea, while looking at the shore of the Croatian Islands that we passed by on the way to Stari Grad. During my approximately 2 hours long journey we passed by Ciovo Island and between the island of Solta and Brac. When you arrived in the ferry port of Stari grad there are local buses that can take you to the city center of Stari Grad, Jelsa and Hvar.
